James Frederick Newnham was born in Martley 1882. He is listed in the 1901 census as resident at Stourport, occupation given as a Pupil Teacher. He died aged 37 after a short illness at 30 Arden Road, Birchfields, Birmingham. Beloved husband of Edith Newnham. Service at Holy Trinity Church, Birchfields tomorrow (Thursday) at 12.45 followed by interment at West Bromwich Cemetery at 2.30 (Source for death and funeral information: Birmingham Mail, 4th February 1920.)

James Newnham married Edith Eveline Clinton at St. Marys Chapel, Kidderminster on 3rd August 1909. He enlisted on 2nd November 1915 at Birmingham and was on home service until 6th February 1916. He embarked at Devonport on the 7th February and arrived in Mombassa on 15th March 1916 where he served with the East Africa Expeditionary Force until February 1919. Appointed Corporal on 4th October 1917, Acting Sergeant on 5th November 1917 and full Sergeant on 5th January 1918. Hospitalised with malaria in May 1918 and influenza in October 1918. James embarked on H.T. “Salamis” at Dar-es-Salamm on 12th February 1919 for transfer to England. He was the son of Frederick Newnham of Church Street, Evesham. Brother: Charles Henry Weaver Newnham and sister Gertrude Newnham. (Service papers WO363/N234)
