Further Information About NEWELL George Albert
George Newell was born in 1891 in Worcester, the son of Edward and Eliza Newell (nee Jones) who had married in 1882. The family resided in Green Lane, Rainbow Hill and Edward and two of his sons earned a living as gardeners. When George left school he joined the Great Western Railway Company where he was employed as a sheet repairer. He enlisted in the Worcestershire Regiment in 1915 and was sent to France where he arrived on 19th July 1915. George died of wounds in a military hospital at Rouen on 28th October 1915 and he was buried in the nearby St Sever Cemetery.
The following report appears in the Kidderminster Times, 13th November 1915:
Lance Corporal George Albert Newell, 17927, 10th Battalion Worcestershire Regiment. Of Worcester. Died of wounds on 28th October. His relatives have received letters of sympathy from G.W.R. by whom he was employed, and from Loyal Fidelis Friendly Society, in which he was described as one of the best members. The report includes a photograph of George Newell.
