Further Information About NELSON John
John Nelson enlisted in the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force on 10th July 1916 at Calgary, Alberta, Canada. On his attestation he gave his date of birth as 25th November 1878 at Manchester, Lancashire, England, his next of kin as Mr John Nelson of Sherbourne, Malvern England and his occupation as a Labourer. He was 5 feet 10 inches tall with grey eyes, brown hair and a fair complexion. He sailed from Halifax, Canada on the SS Olympic with his unit on 21st August 1916, arriving in Liverpool, England on 30th August 1916. On 20th January 1917 John Nelson arrived at Havre, France, joining his unit in the field on 13th February 1917.
On 24th February 1917 John was reported as wounded with a gunshot wound to his right shoulder resulting in his admission to No 11 General Hospital, Camiers, France. Following his recovery he spent time at convalescent depots at Etaples and Cayeux before re-joining his unit at the end of April 1917. He was reported missing in action on 3rd June 1917.
