James Murray was born in 1919. He attended Malvern College in House 5 from 1933 to 1937.

On 10th April 1942 James Murray was the pilot of Wellington HB856 which took off from RAF Stradishall on a mission to bomb Essen in Germany. The target area was obscured by heavy cloud and after encountering heavy and accurate anti-aircraft fire, the aircraft crashed at Gelsenkirschen-Hullen killing all the crew. Originally buried at the crash site, after the war the crew were reburied in Reichswald Forest War Cemetery.
