James was born in 1893 at Suckley, the son of Thomas and Margaret Mifflin. The 1911 census shows the family consisting of Thomas, Margaret and 6 of their 7 surviving children living at Pewcroft, Suckley. James aged 18 was employed as a farm labourer. He enlisted in the army along with his younger brother Albert at Abertilley, South Wales.
