Henry Matthews was the son of John Albert and Ellen Matthews of 6, Parkes Passage, Stourport. Formerly in the employ of Miss Purser of the High Street Henry had been a member of the Territorials for four years before the war and had volunteered for the front at the beginning of hostilities. He spent six months in the trenches and was a witness of the sad death of Reginald Jones. He was struck by a piece of shell and died soon after his arrival at hospital.

On April 13th the 1st/7th Worcesters captured the ridge which runs Southwards from Le Sart Farm to Malakoff Farm, South of Gouzeaucourt. The action cost 6 killed and 30 wounded.
