Further Information About MASSY Lionel Henry
Lionel Massy was born in 1888. He attended Bromsgrove School in Gordon House from 1900 to 1906. He played in the school’s XV and XI teams. Lionel was the son of Major Massey, of the Essex Regiment and having obtained a post under the Colonial Office he came home on leave and applied to go to the front. His application was refused and he was ordered to return to his work. Whilst returning to his colonial base on board the Falaba, the ship was torpedoed by U36 on 28th March 1915. Having secured a seat on one of the ship’s lifeboats, it was found to be overloaded so he and another officer jumped overboard into the icy cold water to which he succumbed. His fellow officer was rescued unconscious 3 hours later and recovered.
