Further Information About MARE Arthur Llewellyn
Captain, R.F.A.
Born July 22nd, 1895. Fell in France, May 27th, 1918.
Arthur Mare was the son of C. D. Mare, Esq., of Chelnark, Bridgnorth. He entered Castle House from Hurst Leigh Preparatory, Tunbridge Wells, in January, 1909, and left from the Fifth Form in 1912 to enter a cotton business in Liverpool. He was a vigorous athlete, playing for the 1st IX. Football in 1911. He was also Lance-Sergeant in the O.T.C. An enthusiastic motorist he enlisted as a despatch rider at the outbreak of the war and soon went to France. Later he returned to take a commission in the Liverpool Regiment with which he again served in France. He then transferred to the R.F.A. and obtained his Captaincy early in the year and was killed in action while commanding his battery at the time of the German offensive. An adventurous spirit, he disliked business and craved out-door life, and the war gave him the opportunity of the active life which he loved.
