The following information has been researched by Dave Pugh:
Frederick Manners-Smith joined the Gloucestershire Regiment in May 1891, and became a lieutenant in October 1892. He was transferred to the Indian Army in June 1893 and in 1895 he served in the Chitral relief force. He was battalion adjutant 1901-1905 having been promoted to Captain in July 1901. He became a Major in May 1909. He died from wounds received on the same day near La Bassee.
