A HAMTON MAN’S DEATH
Much sympathy is felt for Mr. and Mrs. James Malin, of School road, Great Hampton in the death of their youngest son, Pte. Thos. Malin of the Worcester Regiment. He joined the colours about three years ago, and has been in France for two years. Last week the following letter was received from the Commanding Officer by Mrs. Malin: – “Dear Madam, – I deeply regret to inform you of your son’s death, which took place early this morning. While sleeping in is dug-out a bomb exploded and he was struck by a fragment, which killed him instantly. All his papers and little treasures have been collected and will be forwarded to you. He is being buried in a little cemetery behind our lines and his grave will be carefully noted by the Graves Registration Society, who will help you in any way they can. Believe me, I sympathise deeply with you in your loss. He was a true soldier, trusted by everyone, always willing to do his bit, and we shall all miss him. Mrs. Malin also received a letter from the Chaplain giving particulars similar to those contained in the Commanding Officer’s letter. Pte. T. Malin was 25 years of age, and worked before joining the Army for Mr. Frank White. He was home on leave last September. Mr. and Mrs. Malin have had the misfortune to lose two other sons. Pte. John Malin died last March from bronchitis and inflammation of the lungs, and their son, William, who had been discharged from the Army, was killed on the railway near Redditch last October. Their son Charles is with the forces in Mesopotamia. We are sorry to state that Mrs. Malin has been in bed since Monday and is seriously ill.

The following information relates to William Malin, the brother of John and Thomas Malin:
Evesham Journal and Four Shires Advertiser. 3rd November 1917:
HAMPTON – KILLED ON THE RAILWAY
A fatal accident occurred on Saturday night to William Malin (34), a bricklayer, a native of this village. Deceased was in the employ of the Midland Railway Company, and on Saturday went to King’s Norton for special work on the Sunday. He was proceeding down the line from King’s Norton station, and on approaching the hut near Lifford, the 9.10 express from Birmingham to Gloucester struck him and carried him forty yards, causing injuries to the head, from which he died immediately. His body was brought to Hampton on Wednesday, and on Thursday, after a short service in the church there, he was buried a Evesham Cemetery. Before the outbreak of war he was a member to the Evesham Territorials, and went out to France with them in March, 1916. After being there about six months he was invalided in Boulogne hospital, transferred to Netley Hospital, afterwards coming to Abbey Manor Hospital, Evesham. On leaving this institution he went to Sutton Coldfield, and was eventually discharged from the Army. He was a good footballer, and a prominent member of the Evesham United Club. He was also a member of the Territorial Band. He married a daughter of the late Mr. Jesse Grove, of Evesham, and leaves a widow and two children, for whom much sympathy is felt.

William married Lucy Annie Grove in 1905. They are both buried in Waterside Cemetery in Section A. Plot No.2434. The ashes of their son William George who was born in 1907 and died in 1988 are also interred in this plot.
