HMS E18 was sent to support the Russian Fleet and patrol the Baltic by the First Lord of the Admiralty, Winston Churchill. The last contact with the crew of E18 was in late May 1916 when they made a report on a German ship they had attacked and damaged. The submarine remained on patrol and was never heard from again. It is thought that she struck a German mine or may have been sunk by gunfire from a German ship. All hands on board were lost.
The wreck of the submarine was found in the Baltic Sea in 2009 off the coast of Estonia, more than 90 years after she disappeared.
