Further Information About MABSON George Edward

George Mabson was born in Blockley in 1886, one of at least seven children. His father was a gardener. He was at home until at least 1891. In 1901, his father, now a widower, remained in the village, with those of his children who had not married and left home; except George who, curiously, was living in West Bromwich with the family of George Keyte and was listed as his adopted son. He was working as an office boy at a brewer’s. George Keyte was a widower, occupation “preparing sand” and born in Blockley.

In 1910 George married in West Bromwich and set up home there, working as a brewery bottler. His personal military documents have not survived but there is other documentation relating to his regiment. He served as a Private in the 6th Battalion of the Royal Berkshire Regiment, which was founded in September 1914 in Reading and which crossed to France in late July 1915. George enlisted in West Bromwich in late 1914 or early 1915 and crossed to France with his battalion, and was thus a volunteer. He died in action in France in 1917.

From the Medal Index Card:
George Mabson, Royal Berks Regt, Private, 12475. Served in France from 27th July 1915. Killed in action. Awarded the Victory Medal, the 1915 Star and the and British War Medal.
