ANOTHER WAR CASUALTY – GUNNER LLOYD
1941 saw the first loss of a Severn Stoke serviceman since the Dunkirk campaign. Thirty-five year old Gunner William Archibald Lloyd was the second son of Charles and Dorcas Lloyd of The Row in Severn Stoke. He had started his adult life working as a telegraph messenger at the village post office and later transferred to Droitwich as a postman-driver. In 1940 he had enlisted in the Royal Artillery. A year later, on August 10th he was driving a lorry as part of a military convoy on the A41 between Aylesbury and Tring which stopped for an hourly break at Uncle Tom’s Cafe on Tring Hill. When Lloyd emerged from the cafe he dashed across the road to get back to his vehicle and was knocked down and fatally injured by another army lorry travelling in the opposite direction. He died in Aylesbury hospital that night.

A letter from W.J.S. Davies Severn Stoke Rectory, dated 16th May 1950 can be found within war records held at Worcestershire Archives requesting that Driver William Archibald Lloyd, RASC, be added to the county roll of honour.
