On the night of 19th/20th December 1941 HMS Kandahar along with HMS Neptune ran into an uncharted minefield off the coast of Tripoli. Sustaining severe damage HMS Kandahar drifted clear of the minefield and at 04.00 HMS Jaguar arrived from Malta to evacuate the 173 survivors onboard the stricken ship. At dawn HMS Kandahar was scuttled by a torpedo from HMS Jaguar. Seventy three of Kandahar’s crew died.
Commemorated on the Neptune and Kandahar Memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum, Alrewas.
