Further Information About LEWIS Walter Henry
Mentioned in Despatches.
Walter Lewis was born 1894. He attended Bromsgrove School from 1909 to 1913 in School House. He played in the XV team and was a Corporal in the OTC. He was also a fine gymnast. On the night of 30th-31st July 1917 while giving orders to his battery previous to an attack, Lewis was caught by a wave of German gas; he was taken to hospital but died four days later. He had adopted the army as a profession and his service in France had received very high praise. He was recommended for a Military Cross for his work on the Somme and again in connection with the attack in which he met his death. On various occasions he showed marked courage, maintaining the record of efficiency and vigour which he established at School.
