Further Information About LEWIS Henry George

Henry George Lewis was born in Winslow, Hereford in 1890, the first child of George and Alice Lewis (nee Corbett) who had married in 1889.  In 1891 the couple were living with their young son on Beacon Hill near Bromyard and over the next 10 years they moved a number of times with a son born in Bromsberrow, Gloucestershire, a daughter in Rochford, Worcestershire and another son in Grimley, Worcestershire.  By the time of the 1901 census the family were living at Bank Farm, Shrawley where George worked as a carter on a farm.  When he was old enough Harry also took employment on a farm and in 1911 he was residing as a boarder with a family at Holt Heath.  It is not known when Harry enlisted in the Worcestershire Regiment and was sent overseas to serve in the front line trenches.  He was killed in action in France on 3rd September 1916.

Our Roll of Honour.
We have, from time to time, given the names of those connected with our parish who are serving in the War.  A wish has been expressed that we should have a complete list printed, stating the particular branch of service in which each man is engaged.  We accede to this request in supplying the following Roll:-
Harry Lewis Worcester Regt

United Parish Magazine, December 1916:
We record, with deep regret, the deaths of four brave men from our parochial Roll of Honour :- Harry Lewis, Roland Green, Robert Mann and Francis Akerman. Expressing our fullest sympathy with the relatives of these heroes in their bereavement, we firmly believe that they have followed in the footsteps of our Lord in laying down their lives for their friends, and for humanity.
