Private W.G. Lane 1st/1st Worcester Yeomanry, embarked at Avonmouth 9th April 1915 for service with the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, disembarked at Alexandria, Egypt on 24th April 1915. Granted Commission 1st/1st Worcestershire Yeomanry 27th October 1917. Wounded 3rd November 1917, died of wounds 7th November 1917.

The 1911 Census shows that William, aged 16 was working at Clerkenleap Farm for his father, also William. His mother Mary, sisters Gladys, Vera, Kathleen and Marie, brothers Cyril and Reginald made up the remainder of the household.
