On 15th June 1944 HMS Blackwood was on patrol in the English Channel protecting ships taking part in the Normandy landings. She was hit by a torpedo fired from U-764 which damaged the ship and led to the loss of 58 crew from her complement of 156. The ship foundered the next day whilst under tow and sank off Portland Bill, Dorset.
