Further Information About KEYTE Thomas

Thomas Keyte was born in Blockley in 1897, the fifth of nine children and the first son of Thomas and Fanny Keyte.  His father was a farm labourer. Thomas was at home until at least 1911, when he also was working as a farm labourer and he was still resident in Blockley when he enlisted for war service, perhaps in 1915 or 1916.  His personal military documents have unfortunately not survived.  He served in the 1st Battalion of the Worcestershire Regiment in Flanders.  This was a regular battalion of the regiment, which deployed to France in November 1914, soon after the outbreak of war.  Thomas was not with them then at this time; the lack of a campaign star indicates deployment abroad no earlier than 1916.  It is likely that he was a conscript, or at the most a late volunteer (1915).
