Jack Kennedy enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force on 4th October 1940 at Fort William, Ontario, Canada. He was born on 30th April 1918 at Elm Creek, Manitoba, the son of Matthew Sexsmith Kennedy, Veterinary Surgeon, born Carman, Manitoba and Hattie Elizabeth Kennedy nee Vallier, born Wallaceburg, Ontario. His father is recorded as deceased and Jack lived with his mother at Red Lake, Ontario, Canada. He was employed as a miner at the time of his enlistment. His service records list the particulars of his education and employment. Jack was 5 feet 7 inches tall with blue eyes, brown hair and a ruddy complexion.
The RCAF record the following information on the crash in which Jack Kennedy died:
The crew was detailed to carry out a Cross-Country Flight: Base-Coding Bank Mull of Galloway-Point ‘A’-Aberystwyth-Base. E.T.A. at Base was 15.15. hrs. The last Signals received from the Aircraft was at 14.35 hrs. About 1900 hrs. 6 Group Operations stated that the Royal Observer Corps Headquarters at Cardiff reported that a Wellington had crashed on fire near Llangammach Wells, Breconshire, at 15.35 hrs; this aircraft was R.1597.
The cause of the crash is unknown and is subject of a Court of Inquiry on 15.4.42.
Sergeant Jack Matthew Kennedy, Canadian, age 23, serving with the Royal Air Force died at Llangammach Wells, Breconshire and was buried in consecrated ground in Pershore Cemetery on 15th April 1942. The ceremony was performed by the Reverend E.A. Stone, R.A.F. Station, Pershore.
