Further Information About KENDRICK William

Appears in the Worcester/Worcestershire Roll of Honour Book for army casualties located in Worcester Cathedral.

William Kendrick enlisted as a Private in the army for a period of 3 years on 2nd September 1914 at Worcester.  On his attestation paper he gave his place of birth as Dodford, Droitwich, Worcestershire, his age as 22 years 217 days and his occupation as a Grocer.  William was 5 feet 5¼ inches tall with a fresh complexion, brown eyes and auburn hair.  His next of kin was his wife Martha, 1 Wakeman Street, Barbourne, Worcester whom he had married on 24th March 1913 in Worcester (Martha Fincher Lane, Spinster). The couple had no children.

William remained on Home Service until 20th May 1915 when he was posted overseas to join the British Expeditionary Force in France, arriving there on 21st May 1915.  He was promoted to Lance Corporal on 3rd July 1915 and Corporal on 4th August 1915.  On 26th September 1915 William was wounded, receiving a gunshot wound to the knee which resulted in him returning to England on 28th September 1915 where he remained until 13th December 1915.  Following his recovery he was granted a furlough from 26th October 1915 to 4th November 1915 before returning to France on 14th December 1915.  He joined the 9th Battalion King’s Royal Rifle Corps on 24th December 1915 and was killed in action on 20th March 1916.

William Kendrick has no known grave, the photograph available shows his name on the Arras  Memorial.
