James Jones enlisted in the army on 16th December 1935. He was posted to France in 1939, evacuated from Dunkirk in 1940 and saw service in North Africa in 1943. He made a parachute landing on 6th June 1944 during the D-Day landings. He was shot by a sniper two hours after landing in Arnhem on 17th September 1944.

Abberley Paratrooper Killed
Private James Arthur Jones, Parachute Regiment,, son of the late Mr and Mrs Edgar Jones, of Abberley, has been killed at Arnhem, as briefly reported last week.
Private Jones, who was 24 years old, joined the Army in 1935 as a bandboy. He went to France in 1939 with the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment and was evacuated at Dunkirk. He served with an A.A. Battery on the South Coast during the Battle of Britain, and in 1943 went to North Africa, returning after nine months, suffering from blood poisoning. He took part in the invasion of Normandy on D-Day, and was later withdrawn. He then took part in the Arnhem operations, where he lost his life. Private Jones leaves a widow and twin daughters, who are two years old.
