Eric was on a training exercise in a Blenheim aircraft when it was involved in a mid air collision with another Blenheim near Knockaloe, Isle of Man, resulting in the deaths of both crews. His father was the managing director of Berrows Newspapers and paid for the erection of a cricket pavilion on the Worcester Royal Grammar School Memorial Ground.
