Frederick Jenkins was born at Amblecote in 1891 and was one of the family of eleven sons of John and Ann Jenkins who lived at 4 Vicarage Road, Wollaston.  He attended Wollaston C of E School from 1900 to 1906 and left to become a baker.  He enlisted in February 1916 in the Gloucesters and joined the 14th Battalion in the 35th Division. The battalion went up to the front line on 22nd June as the preparations for the Battle of the Somme were being completed. The Division was involved in the second phase of the battle at Contalmaison and Delville Wood, and Private Frederick Jenkins was killed in action on the 19th July. He was 24 years of age.  His brother, Joseph, was killed in action on the 26th August at Thiepval.
