Further Information About JAKEMAN Leonard William
HMS St Briac was a cross channel steamer that operated mainly between Southampton and St Malo. She assisted in the Dunkirk evacuations and was requisitioned in June 1941 by the British Admiralty for service as a Merchant Auxiliary. On 12th March 1942 she was serving as a Fleet Air Arm target vessel when she broke down in a strong south-easterly gale. This resulted in the ship drifting into a British minefield off the coast of Scotland where she struck a mine 20 miles East of Arbroath. Six of the crew lost their lives, the remaining crew abandoned ship with further crew members drowning before other ships arrived to pick up survivors. A total of 47 crew members lost their lives.
Leonard Jakeman has no known grave, the photograph available shows his name on Portsmouth Naval Memorial.
