In 1911 Richard Hughes aged 28, Police Constable was a boarder in the home of William Hales at 1 Claremont Hill, Shrewsbury.
Richard Hughes enlisted in the army for a period of 3 years on 24th January 1903 when he gave his age as 19 years 9 months and his occupation as a labourer. In 1906 after serving 3 years and 45 days he was discharged to the Army Reserve. At the time of his discharge he was 5 feet 11 inches tall with a fresh complexion, hazel eyes and brown hair; his intended place of residence was Hesketh Cottages, Thornton Hough. As a reservist, Richard was mobilised on 8th August 1914. He was posted “Missing” on 24th October 1917. It was not until April 1918 that he was reported “Killed in Action 24-10-17” and a letter sent to his wife. A letter was also sent to F. Davies Esq., Chief Constable, The Police Station, Shrewsbury notifying him of the death of Richard Hughes.
