Further Information About HOWFIELD John Arthur
Awarded Military Cross.
John Howfield attended Worcester Royal Grammar School from 1911 to 1916. In March 1918 he was awarded the Military Cross, the citation reading:
“For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. Under heavy shell fire he attended to the casualties that occurred at the ammunition dump of which he was in charge, and succeeded in getting the men under cover of a building. When the building was set on fire by a shell, at great personal risk he dashed into and rescued a man whose clothes had been set on fire. He has always set a fine example of cheerfulness and courage under all conditions.”
