Further Information About HOWELLS Kenneth Thomas

Appears on the Army casualties list for Worcestershire.

Kenneth Howells enlisted in the Worcestershire Regiment and was posted to the 1st Battalion in 1944. The Worcesters were in the 43rd (Wessex) Division which was part of the follow up force to D-Day. They crossed to France on the 18th June and on the 25th they entered the front line in the shattered village of Cheux to the west of Caen. This town was to occupy the British forces for two hard months while Rommel mounted a series of heavy Panzer counter attacks. The 43rd Division was the driving force of the defence and then of the advance southwards. In the battle of the River Odon the Worcesters took Mouen and then played a vital role in capturing Point 112, the high ground over-looking the British forces. The Worcesters’ final advance was to take Mont Pincon in a long battle lasting from 30th July to 9th August. Private Kenneth Howells was killed in the final stage of this battle on the 9th August.
