Walter Hoare attended Bromsgrove School from 1902 to 1905. Having already been mentioned in Despatches he was awarded the DSO; with two sergeants, one of whom was wounded by the intense shell fire, he dug out a buried sergeant and rescued alive. He was on the Stock Exchange when the war began and after eight months training he went to France with his battalion in July 1915 having received his Captaincy in June. He had been married in January 1915.
