Further Information About HITCHMAN Alfred
Alfred Hitchman was born in Brockworth in 1891, his father was an estate labourer. He was living at home with his family in 1901 but it has not been possible to locate him in 1911, when his father was living alone in Blockley, a widower. Possibilities for his whereabouts are contradictory. He would enlist in the armed forces in Rugby, perhaps in 1915 or 1916, suggesting that he may have left home, although another source shows his residence as Blockley. Unfortunately his personal military records have not survived. He enlisted as a private in the 2nd Battalion of the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry and later transferred to the 8th Battalion of the Royal Berkshire Regiment. Both battalions operated in France. He was unmarried when he died in action in France in 1918.
