He was a keen sportsman and after leaving school he went on to Jesus College, Oxford, taking part in rowing events for his college. On 22nd October 1914 he was commissioned into the 9th Battalion of the Worcestershire Regiment and 3 days later on 25th October 1914 he married Mary Teague at his barracks in Coventry. She served with the Scottish Women’s Hospital attached to the Serbian Army. Ernest was twice wounded during the fighting at Gallipoli. On 25th January 1917 fierce fighting took place at the Battle of Kut when British troops repulsed an attack by the 39th Brigade. Losses were heavy with six officers being killed including Ernest Hiscock. His name also appears on the Roll of Honour at Jesus College, Oxford.
