Philip Hill enlisted as a Captain in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) on 27th August 1914 in Sydney, Australia. On his application for a Commission form he gave his date of birth as 3rd November 1881 and stated he was educated at Rugby School. He had 5 years line service with commission as a Captain with the Worcestershire Regiment, seeing action in the Boer War in South Africa from 1900 to 1902, with 9 years service as special reserve. He resigned from the regiment on 29th April 1914. At the time of his application to join the AIF, he was resident at Elevera, Man’s Avenue, Neutral Bay, Sydney. He was single and his next of kin was his mother, Mrs Hill, The Grange, Kempsey, Worcestershire, England. The address was later amended to Abbey House, Great Malvern, Worcestershire. Philip was 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighed 10 stone 4 pounds.
He was promoted to Major on 27th April 1915 and was mentioned in dispatches for an act of conspicuous gallantry and valuable service during the period 25th April to 5th May 1915 at Gallipoli. On 17th May 1915 he received a bullet wound to the abdomen at Gallipoli and he was evacuated to a hospital in Malta, arriving there on 27th May, where his condition on admission was given as ‘dangerous’. He died of his wounds on 9th June 1915 and was buried in Rinella Cemetery, Malta.
