Further Information About HILL John Henry

John Hill was the youngest son of Mrs M. Hill of 13 Cemetery Road, Lye and he worked as a bucket maker at Quarry Bank. He volunteered for the Worcester Territorials in 1914 and joined the 1/7th Battalion. They went to the Western Front in March 1915 and saw front line service soon after. They were very active during the 1916 Battle of the Somme, notably at Ovillers and Pozieres in August. In the Spring of 1917 they followed up the German retreat to the Hindenburg Line and were called upon again for the Third Battle of Ypres. On the 16th August they attacked the ruined village of St. Julien and made some ground but Private John Hill was among those killed in action. He was 23 years of age.
