Jack Hill was born on 21st December 1892, the son of John James and Ellen Hill of Kidderminster. He entered Old Swinford Hospital on 16th June 1903 and left the school on 19th August 1908 when he was apprenticed to H & H Bridge, painters and glaziers of Kidderminster.

Kidderminster Shuttle, 18th September 1915:
Mrs Hill, of 4 New Road, has received official news that her son Lance-Corporal John Hill, of the 4th Worcesters, is missing. We recently gave his photograph and a brief sketch of his career, but no definite news was received from thr War Office till last week. The following note is attached:- €œThe term missing does not necessarily ean that the soldier is killed or wounded. He may be an unwounded prisoner or temporarily separated from his regiment.€

Kidderminster Shuttle, 9th October 1915:
Mrs Hill of 4 New Road, has received official notification that her son Lance-Corporal Jack Hill, of the 4th Worcesters, has died of wounds received in action with the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force in April. He was reported missing some time ago, but official news was not forthcoming till this week. Lance-Corporal Hill was formerly employed at Messrs. H. & H. Bridges.

A further newspaper excerpt gives the information that he joined the 4th Worcesters and was sent to Brailly, in India, and later to Burmah. At the outbreak of war he returned from India with his regiment to spend 3 days leave with his mother in Kidderminster before proceeding to the front.
