Additional information on the memorial: Sergeant
Percy Hemming was born in 1884. He attended School as a day boy from 1897 to 1904 where he was a School Monitor and played in the school XV and XI teams. At School, Hemming was conspicuous in many ways. He was Headmaster of Crowle School and joined up in February 1915 and became Sergeant in December. He went out to France in July 1915 and was wounded exactly a year later. Since that time nothing further was heard of him and his death was presumed by The War Office.

Percy Hemming and his family moved to the village of Crowle in 1909 when Percy took up the position of headmaster at Crowle School. His wife also worked in the school with him. After enlisting in the army he left the school on 5th February 1915 to go to war. His last entry in the school logbook records his intention to serve until the end of the war or as long as his Majesty requires his service and hands over the charge of the school to Miss A.M. Wingfield.
