Ernest Haywood was baptised on 8th December 1893, the 5th child of Sidney George and Fanny (nee Price) Haywood. Sidney was a wheelwright and carpenter and the family lived at Hill Farm, Abberley. Ernest attended the village school along with his siblings and was mentioned in the school log book in August 1904 for using ‘bad language’. After leaving school and prior to enlistment he worked on Hill Farm.
