Further Information About HAWKINS Oliver

Evesham Journal and Four Shires Advertiser, 1st May 1915:
DEATH OF LIEUT. HAWKINS
Official information stating that his ward Lieut. O.L. Hawkins had died from wounds was received on Wednesday morning by the Rev. G.L. Harding, late Vicar of Hampton. Lieut. Hawkins was at Cambridge University until he succeeded in getting a commission a short time ago, and had not been in the firing line long before he was wounded. He died on Monday. Since the Rev. G.L. Harding has resided at Hampton most of Lieut. Hawkins vacations have been spent at the Vicarage, and on occasions he has read the lessons in the church. He was much liked by all who knew him in the district, and great sympathy is felt for the Vicar for his loss.

(Oliver was the son of William Slade and Bessie Constance Hawkins (nee Millard) who were married in 1886. Oliver was not a local man.)

The clock on Hampton St Andrew’s Church is a war memorial to WW1 and is inscribed with the words: War Memorial 1914-18.

The tenor bell is inscribed “also in memory of the sons of Hampton who died for the sacred cause of liberty and freedom”.
