Educated at Bromsgrove School.  Scholar of Worcester College, Oxford.

Appears in the Worcester/Worcestershire Roll of Honour Book for army casualties located in Worcester Cathedral.

Norman Hartley was born in 1898. He attended Bromsgrove School from 1911 to 1916 where he was Head Monitor, played for the school XV and XI teams, was a Sergeant in OTC and was Editor of The Bromsgrovian. He obtained an exhibition at Worcester College, Oxford and joined an Artillery O.C.B. but managed while training, to matriculate at London University so as to be eligible to compete for the Worfield Exhibition which he won in July. In September he went to France. A shell caught him while he was laying signal lines up to an observation post, shattered one leg badly and perforated the other in several places; he died about 2 hours later from shock while being taken to the advanced dressing station. At the time he was acting as liaison officer at a Battalion H.Q.
