Walter Harris was born on 26th December 1878. He entered Old Swinford Hospital on 14th June 1887 and left the school on 22nd February 1893 when he was apprenticed to Mr W. Hughes, Printer of Halesowen.

Walter Stephen Harris aged 27 married Ida Florence Brown aged 25 in Canada when both were resident in Toronto. The couple had at least two daughters, Minnie born in 1907 and Irene born in 1909.

Walter Harris enlisted in the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force on 3rd May 1916 at Orangeville, Ontario, Canada. On his attestation paper he gave his date of birth as 26th December 1880, his place of birth as Worcestershire, England and his profession as a journalist. His next of kin was his wife, Ida Florence Harris of 181 Davisville Avenue, Toronto. This was later amended to c/o Mrs J. Snider, Woodbridge P.O., Ontario. Benjamin was 5 feet 11 inches tall with brown eyes, black hair and a dark complexion.

Walter sailed with his unit from Hailfax, Canada on the S.S. Carpathia on the 11th April 1917 arriving in England on the 22nd April 1917. On the 22nd May he was appointed Acting Battery Quarter Master Sergeant and then to Acting Sergeant on the 5th June 1917. Walter reverted back to the rank of Private on the 12th October 1917 for being Absent Without Leave. He was killed in action on the 27th September 1918.
