Flight Sergeant Robert Hardwick was the wireless operator/air gunner on Halifax III LV918 code NP-O which took off from RAF Lissett, Yorkshire at 22.55 hours on 24th May 1944. The aircraft was one of over 440 aircraft operating a bombing raid on the railway yards at Aacen, Germany. Although the targets were hit bomber command lost 29 aircraft with 147 crew killed, 56 taken prisoner and 6 evading capture. Robert’s Halifax was lost over the target area with the loss of 4 of the crew and 3 being taken prisoner.
