Thomas Hardman was born in the parish of Ancoats, Lancashire. He was 19 years of age and working as a labourer when he enlisted in the Royal artillery on 24th August 1896 in Manchester. He was 5 feet 8¼ inches tall with a fresh complexion, hazel eyes and brown hair.
His service record shows that he was imprisoned by his Commanding Officer on 2nd November 1898 for 14 days, returned to duty on 16th November 1898, was awaiting trial for 4 days from 16th January 1899 and was tried and imprisoned for 28 days on 20th January 1899, returning to duty on 17th February 1899. He was discharged from the Royal Artillery on 3rd August 1908.
