Further Information About HANDS William Henry
Awarded the Military Medal (M.M.)
William Hands was born at Wythall Heath in 1895, the son of George and Ellen Hands. George was a housepainter. By 1911, William was employed as a chocolate moulder at Cadbury Bros Ltd at Bournville. His name is recorded on page 257 of the Birmingham Employers Roll of Honour 1914-1918. William enlisted as a Lance Corporal in the West Yorkshire Regiment, rising to the rank of Sergeant. He arrived in France on 26th August 1915 and at some point he was awarded the Military Medal; unfortunately his service records have not survived to provide further details. As well as his Military Medal he was also awarded the British War Medal, the Victory Medal and the 1915 Star.
