Ronald Douglas Haines was the son of Nabor and Gladys Haines of Sherrifs Lench. After leaving school he worked for the Empire Meat Company in Evesham as a van driver and was a member of the Home Guard. He joined the Army in late 1942. By 1944 he was in the Pioneer Corps and was stationed at the army fire fighting centre at Catterick where he contracted what was believed to be meningitis. His parents were at his bedside for the last two weeks of his life. He died on 19th April 1944 aged 20. At his funeral members of the Home Guard acted as pall bearers.
