Surname spelt Gwynn on Commonwealth War Graves Commission and Soldiers Died in the Great War.
Walter Gwynn(e) enlisted in the Worcestershire Regiment for a period of 3 years on 30th June 1904 at Bloemfontein. On his attestation paper he gave his place of birth as Malvern, Worcestershire, his age as 26 years and his occupation as a blacksmith. He had previously served with the Worcestershire Regiment and after serving in South Africa from 1899 to 1902 he was discharged by purchase. At the time of his attestation in 1904 Walter was 5 feet 6½ inches tall with a dark complexion, brown eyes and dark brown hair. He remained on service in Africa before being posted to Ceylon on 22nd October 1904. He remained there until late November 1906, returning to England on 28th January 1907. On the expiration of his period of service, Walter was transferred to the Army Reserve on 29th June 1907. On 9th January 1911 he married Flora Taylor in Scunthorpe. When war broke out in August 1914, as a reservist Walter was mobilised almost immediately on 5th August 1914.
A letter from the Infantry Records Office written to his wife, Mrs Flora Gwynne at a Canadian address, was returned. The letter stated that Private Walter Gwynn was buried in:- “A Low Pit, 50 yards East of the Main Road, in the South East angle of Cross Road, Lindenhoek, 1 and three quarter miles North East of Dranoutre, France”. Documentation completed by Walter’s father, John on 6th August 1920 gave Flora’s address as 1d Wells St, Scunthorpe and Walter’s parents as John and Emma Gwynne of Woodland ***, West Malvern. Walter and Flora had no children.
