George Griffiths was born in Worcester in 1891, the son of Thomas and Emily Griffiths (nee Jones) who had married in 1880. In 1901 the family were living in Mayfield Road and consisted of Thomas, Emily and their 7 children – 6 sons and 1 daughter. Thomas and his eldest son worked on the railway, George at 9 years old was still at school. Thomas died in 1904 and by 1911 Ellen was living as a widow at 32 Gillam Street, Worcester with 3 of her 5 surviving children, 2 of George’s older brothers having died between 1901 and 1911. Emily died aged 56 in 1912. George enlisted in the Notts and Derby Regiment as a private having previously been employed as a general labourer. He arrived in France with his battalion on 9th February 1915 and just over a month later on 12th March 1915 he was killed in action.
George Griffiths has no known grave, the photograph available shows his name on Le Touret Memorial.
