Walter Giles enlisted in the Royal Engineers on 10th December 1915, probably under the Derby Scheme as he was not mobilised until 12th April 1917. On his attestation paper he gave his age as 32 years 2 months, his occupation as a plasterer and his address as The Cottage, Burcot. This was later amended to Orchard Rd, Bromsgrove. Walter was 5 feet 6½ inches tall. He gave his next of kin as his wife, Elizabeth Giles (nee Matthews), Green Dragon, High St, Bromsgrove. The couple married on 14th September 1902 in All Saints Church, Bromsgrove and had 4 daughters: Doris May born 13th May 1904, Elsie Hilda born 28th January 1907, Lily born 9th January 1911 and Ivy Gwendoline born 6th June 1914. After mobilisation Walter was posted on 15th November 1917. He was killed in action two months later on 18th January 1918.
