Horace Gibbs enlisted in the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force on 4th January 1915 at Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. On his attestation form he gave his date of birth as 15th October 1883 in Newport, Monmouthshire, England, his next of kin as his mother, Mrs Gibbs, Foley View, Priory Road, Great Malvern, Worcestershire England and his profession as a farmer. He was 5 feet 5 inches tall with blue eyes, dark hair and a fair complexion.
Horace sailed from Halifax, Canada on the SS Missanabie on 18th April 1916 arriving in Liverpool, England on 28th April 1916. He proceeded overseas on 8th June 1916 arriving in France the following day and joining his unit in the field on 11th June 1916. Horace was posted missing on 27th September 1916; this was later amended to ‘killed in action’.
