Further Information About GAUNT John

John Gaunt was born at Stafford on 13th November 1885.  He joined the Royal Navy in 1903, previously being employed as a carpet wheeler.  He served on HMS Impregnable, Agincourt, Victory, Invincible, Mercury and Dolphin before being drafted to HMS Maidstone, a submarine depot ship, on 3rd December 1916.  H.M. Submarine ‘C16’ was accidentally rammed and sunk by HMS Melampus off Harwich on 16th April 1917.  He was the brother of Percy Gaunt who was killed in July 1916 after only about three weeks at the front.
