Alfred Garrington was the son of William Albert Garrington and Miriam Florence Crew who married within the Dudley Registration District in the March Quarter 1899. The birth of Alfred Ernest Garrington is registered in the June Quarter 1899 under the Stourbridge Registration District.

Alfred enlisted in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve on 21st August 1915 when he gave his date of birth as 12th April 1897, his address as 43 Muriel Road, Leicester, his occupation as a dairyman and his next of kin as his father, William Albert Garrington of the same address. Alfred was 5 feet 3 and a half inches tall with a fair complexion, light brown hair and blue eyes.
HMS Erin’s Isle was a British paddle steamer that had been requisitioned by the Royal Navy as a minesweeper. On 8th February 1919 whilst on post war mine clearance duties, she hit a mine off Long Sand in the Thames Estuary and sank with the loss of 23 of her crew.
