GARBETT Ernest George

Ernest Garbett enlisted as a Private in the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force on 12th April 1915 at Toronto, Ontario, Canada. On his attestation paper he gave his place of birth as Drybrook, England, his date of birth as 18th September 1895, his next of kin as his mother, Alice Garbett, 5 Paling Cottage, Malvern, England and his occupation as a Labourer. Ernest was 5 feet 6½ inches tall with blue eyes, brown hair and a medium complexion.

Ernest sailed with his unit from Montreal, Canada on the S.S. Hesperian on 17th August 1915 bound for England. After several weeks in camps at Shorncliffe and then West Sandling in Kent he was posted to the 14th Battalion and left England on November 1915 bound for France where he joined the Battalion on 6th November 1915. On 22nd May 1916 Ernest was admitted to No 10 Canadian Field Ambulance with a shrapnel wound to his right hand. He rejoined his unit on 8th June 1916. On 11th January 1917 he was promoted to Corporal and then to Sergeant on 11th April 1917. Ernest was admitted to No 23 Casualty Clearing Station as seriously ill on 12th July 1917 where he died the following day from Septicaemia.

Next of kin: Mrs A. Garbett, 5 Paling Cottage, Lower Wyche, Malvern, Worcestershire.
Buried in Cemetery D. 14.C.8.6. Map 1/40.000 Lapugnoy 3½ miles S.S.E. of Lillers.
